If you run out of battery in the Tesla Cybertruck you will almost have to study to open the rear door. Not practical or safe in case of an accident

The vast majority of electric cars open their doors electronically, meaning they need power from the low-voltage battery. Tesla cars are no exception, which includes the Tesla Cybertruck. And that means if this battery runs out, or The power supply is cut off in the event of an accidentthe doors cannot be opened from the outside.

Yes, you can do it from within thanks to your manual opening system. This prevents occupants from getting trapped. But with the Tesla Cybertruck this gets complicated: first, because the Tesla solution is always quite convoluted And secondly, because of the very appearance of this huge electric pick-up truck. This is anything but desirable in an emergency.

An electric and armored pick up or a Escape Room?

As with the rest of the Teslathe Cybertruck has different systems to open the doors manually from inside: from the outside it is impossible since they do not have a key (it is accessed by card or from the app). The front seats have a lever on the door, next to the window lift buttons. So far so good, although you should know that this lever is used for this, reading it in the manual beforehand, unless the seller tells us otherwise.

But in the case of the rear seats, it is not so simple. The manual release is located in the pocket of the rear door and is well hidden. First you have to remove the rubber mat covering the bottom; then Lift a sort of plastic cover to find the “mechanical release cable” (with a ring to make the task easier) and while pulling it, push the door.

An emergency opening that is very difficult to access in case of emergency. This is all in the “hypothetical case that Cybertruck does not have a low-voltage power supply,” Tesla details in the manual. This can happen because the 12V battery is discharged or if we have an accident.

Not just any accident, mind you: it will only happen if the airbags deploy. As in most cars, for safety reasons, when they deploy, the power supply is cut off. This happens because of an emergency fuse, which breaks when the airbag opens.

But if we put ourselves in that scenario, the system is very impractical, to put it mildly. And certainly not intuitive: imagine the situation of having to explain to the rear passenger the entire process of opening the door so that he can get out of the car. Tesla Cybertrucknerves after suffering a crash.

It’s almost Easier to move to the front seats if you have sufficient mobility and exit through the front doorBut of course, we are talking about an accident: this will be impossible if the rear passengers are seriously injured or unconscious.

The other option: break an armored window. If the rear passenger is unable to get out of the car on their own, the only option left is to open the door from outside and by force, as there is no way to do it manually. In the case of the Cybertruck, the trunk cannot be accessed from the passenger compartment, so manually opening the bed of this pickup truck is of little use.

But it turns out that the windows of the Tesla Cybertruck are armored. The Californian brand boasts in its specifications that can “withstand the impact of a baseball at 112 km/h” and class 4 hail impacts (the highest protection available), meaning breaking them will not be an easy task.

In all Teslas the manual opening is a nuisance, in fact in the Tesla Model X there is until you remove the door speaker. But after the SUV, the Cybertruck probably takes the cake. Although this summer a Model Y already demonstrated that Tesla’s system should be given a new look: a baby was trapped in a Tesla Model Y in full sun, after the 12V battery was discharged and, to get him out, the firemen had to break the rear window.

If it had been a Cybertruck instead of a Model Y, it would have been much more difficult to get it out of there. Although, we recently saw how one owner had his electric pickup stolen by literally rolling up the front window with his hands. Perhaps that’s a better option than hammering it.

Teslas are not the only cars with electronic opening that lack a key: the solution keyless It is very fashionable and is usually fitted in the most complete options of cars. It will be very comfortable in everyday life, but not so much in emergency situations. And if we add a complicated manual system and an armoured mass, we have the perfect combo.
