A mobile court of upazila administration seized a dredger while extracting sand from Ariyal Khan river in Dhewkhali union in Sadarpur of Faridpur and sentenced one person to three months imprisonment.
The operation was conducted at Charbalashia Madrasa Ghat of Dheukhali Union of the upazila on Monday afternoon.
The arrested dredger director is Sheikh Hasan, son of Sheikh Haider of Sadarpur Upazila. Sadarpur Upazila District Officer and Executive Hakim Al Mamun conducted the operation. At the end of the mobile court, the arrested person was handed over to Sadarpur police station.
It is known that Sheikh Hasan has been illegally cutting sand from rivers, canals and other places with dredgers in violation of the law for a long time. Locals have been complaining against him for cutting sand since long ago. Based on those allegations, he was arrested and sent to jail.
Confirming this information on Tuesday morning, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Al Mamun said, ‘The dredger has been seized and the local UP members are being held hostage. Our upazila administration will continue operations to stop illegal sand extraction. (Dhaka Times/October 15/SA)
