David Scott, a 95-year-old former World War II veteran, took up the sport almost coerced and forced. “At the time I was living in Chicago in a bad neighborhood. So I started the fight so I could defend myself if necessary.”
At university, he obviously joined the wrestling team. He even became welterweight champion, a category reserved for those under 77 kilos. “Wrestling is not only a great way to build strength, it’s also great for mental health,” says the nonagenarian. “And that’s what brought me to fitness.”
I feel like a 70 year old man
Today, at 95, he has put together a fitness routine that he strives to follow several times a week. “I am particularly proud of my lung capacity and my muscular strength. I feel like a 70-year-old man” he declares at Parade magazine.
“On days when I work out, I feel like I have more energy and my body even looks forward to my workouts.”
Her weekly fitness routine
On the days when he goes to the gym to train (evenings three times a week), David Scott walks 1 km around his neighborhood to warm up and increase his heart rate a little.
Then his fitness routine begins with lifting weights. “In the gym you have weights of different sizes and I try to stretch and contract my muscles with 20 repetitions.” He then works the back, legs and abs by following a program of around thirty minutes on the machines.
To fellow seniors who are amazed at his “Olympic” form he advises to “overcome any fear or laziness they may have”, adding “Do it and you won’t regret it. If you continue to exercise , you will feel younger; It will also help you play more easily with your grandchildren.”
