It seems that, despite the events of the past few weeks, Sándor Csányi stands by what he said after the draw, that it would have been a legitimate expectation for the Hungarian national team to advance from the group. In an interview with Nemzeti Sport he stated, he does not deny it, he is disappointed in his personal feelings, he is very sorry that it turned out this way.
– Because he believes that, thanks to the consistent work of the past years and the planned team building, the national team achieved results for a year and a half before the European Championship in Germany, which entitled them to travel to the European Championship with the aim of advancing from the very difficult group – he said president of MLSZ.
He added, seeing things realistically, at the same time, the paper form came in: we lost to two teams that had long been well ahead of us in the world rankings, Switzerland and Germany, while we beat Scotland, which was behind us, in a competitive match. At the same time, he mentioned that several people in the squad were injured at the European Championship, some of the regular starting team came with missing matches, there were no substitutes who were not in good shape, and the results were also affected by previously unseen individual mistakes and refereeing errors. In addition, he agrees with Marco Rossi that the tactical preparation and concentration of the players for the match against Switzerland were not perfect.
– Of course, I am disappointed that we did not advance, but I think that the results should not be seen as a failure. In the past, this team has proven not only to me, but also to the fans, that it has imagination. Next year, we must play football with maximum effort and concentration in order to reach the 2026 World Cup after a forty-year break, said Sándor Csányi.
He believes that, seeing the performance of the past years, there is indeed every chance that the national team will reach the World Cup again after 1986. At the same time, he added, no matter how well the starting team plays in a match, we currently do not have twenty-five, in other words, two international-capable players in each position. He said that his expectations from the team are humility, diligence, work and ambition.
The president of the MLSZ stated that there were indeed many criticisms of the procedure, which will be worth taking into account. But he believes that the calculation was not the reason why some teams that had already advanced relaxed the third group match, but that the teams that had already advanced reserved for the direct elimination stage, sparing a little of their mentally and physically exhausted best. He stated that, despite all the criticism, European football has had a successful European Championship, which was finally won by the Spanish team playing the best and most successful football.
– Of course, I spoke with Marco Rossi, the captaincy issue that appeared in the press did not even arise between the two of us. We have been working with the federal captain for six years now, he is constantly doing a good job, and we have full confidence in him both professionally and personally. We are on the right track, and even though the European Championship turned out below our expectations, I think we have reason to be cautiously optimistic for the next year and a half – claimed Sándor Csányi.
The president of MLSZ does not consider Marca’s claim that Dominik Szoboszlai was among the most disappointing players of the European Championship to be professional. He stated that the fact that his name appears at all in such a compilation indicates the positive fact that his past performance has aroused international interest and anticipation among experts.
– I’m not hiding the fact that his name came up in such a composition, he can’t be proud either, and it makes me sick to see it too. He was not in top form at the European Championship, this is also a consequence of the fact that he was not at 100% since his injury in the winter and in the tournament, he has been struggling with a minor injury for a long time. At the same time, his will and attitude were exemplary, he tried to behave like a leader on the field – claimed Sándor Csányi, who added that, not only because of his age, he cannot be expected to always perform in the form of his life.
