In the case of the iMac with the M1 chip, one external monitor could be connected.
However, in the latest model the situation has changed. The 24-inch iMac powered by the M4 chip can support up to two external displays with resolutions up to 6K at 60 Hz, or one external display with resolutions up to 8K at 120 Hz.
Staying on the subject of the new iMac with M4, take a look at this:
“Up to two external displays with a resolution of up to 6K at 60 Hz or one external display with a resolution of up to 8K at 120 Hz”
Even the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Max does not support this… pic.twitter.com/5rTddqGdeC

It is worth noting here that this is the first Apple computer to support an external display with a resolution of up to 8K at 120 Hz. So far, 8K 60 Hz models were supported.
