It has been revealed that the current CEO of UK company Imagination will be stepping down in a year or so. This comes amid accusations that the company is transferring technology to China. Imagination has long been developing energy-efficient graphics and processor architectures and even became the owner of the MIPS architecture for a time. However, after Apple refused to cooperate with it, it was on the verge of closure. Her problems didn’t end there.
After splitting with Apple in 2020, Imagination relied on its primary investor, financial services firm Canyon Bridge Capital Partners. Canyon Bridge was later accused of using Chinese Communist Party funds to buy technology around the world. This, in particular, did not allow Imagination to retain the assets of the MIPS company, which had to be sold to an American investor, thereby limiting access to this architecture to developers from China and Russia.
In December 2024, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported that Imagination sold access to its developments to two Chinese companies from the “black list” of the US Department of Justice – Biren Technology and Moore Threads. This will supposedly allow Chinese artificial intelligence engineers to create solutions for military systems. Imagination denied this accusation and assured that it always acted within the law, taking into account the interests of UK national security.
Regardless, Bloomberg reported that Canyon Bridge Capital Partners has hired Lazard to find buyers for Imagination. The company’s ordeals continue.
