Domestic. In Södertälje, women have the right to their own personal midwife at the taxpayers’ expense – provided the women are immigrants.
– It is a group of women with more medical complications, says Maria Ström, midwife at Södertälje Hospital, to SVT News Södertälje.
Pregnant women born abroad have a special reception at Södertälje Hospital where they are offered special treatment, which is unique in Stockholm County.
– They can come here to the birth for a two-hour appointment. They get to see a delivery room and ask their questions, and we get the opportunity to inform them about women’s rights. It gives a completely different sense of security, says Maria Ström to SVT.
Almost half (43.3 percent, 2023) of the residents of Södertälje are foreign-born, so it is a significant group that has access to the privilege.
