(Health Korea News / Yoo Ji-in) Lim Hyun-taek, the president of the Korean Medical Association, who caused various controversies, including abusive language and demanding a 100 million won settlement, was impeached.
The Korean Medical Association announced on the 10th that a no-confidence motion against Chairman Lim was passed at the 2024 extraordinary general meeting. This is the second case of dishonorable resignation by delegate vote, following Chairman Noh Hwan-gyu.
After hearing Chairman Lim’s personal remarks at the general meeting, the delegates held an anonymous vote on the no-confidence motion. The no-confidence (impeachment) motion was passed with 170 votes in favor out of 224 votes. There were 50 people opposed and 4 abstentions.
On October 24, 103 representatives of the Korean Medical Association had previously proposed an impeachment bill, saying, “Chairman Lim has repeatedly made rude remarks and made false statements, defaming the reputation of doctors and the Korean Medical Association, and violating the rights and interests of members by failing to prevent the enactment of the Nursing Act.”
Last month, on his SNS, Chairman Lim targeted Jang Sang-yoon, Senior Secretary to the President for Social Affairs, and said, “You sound like a schizophrenic patient.” He also criticized the Changwon District Court judge who found the doctor guilty, saying, “Is this woman out of her mind?”, sparking controversy. I owe it to you.
In addition, he was at the center of a series of controversies after a recording of him demanding 100 million won in return for withdrawing a complaint against an executive of the Seoul Metropolitan Medical Association who slandered him was made public. Chairman Lim was evaluated as having lost the public support of junior doctors by creating an online conflict with the emergency committee chairman of the Korean Medical Association (Daejeon Association), Park Dan.
Daejeon Hyeop Emergency Committee Chairman Park Dan expressed his support for the impeachment decision by saying, “In the end, everything goes in the right direction.”
On this day, a vote was also held on ‘the proposal to form an emergency response committee of the Korean Medical Association to stop the government’s medical abuse and normalize medical care.’ As a result of the vote, it was passed with 106 out of 169 in favor. There were 63 people opposed and 0 abstentions.
The Korean Medical Association announced, “In accordance with the decision to form the emergency committee, the chairman of the emergency committee will be elected by November 13, and the term of office has been decided to be until the election of the chairman.”
