The Dentist’s expertise in implants plays a decisive role in the success of the result and is one of the success factors of this technique. It is important for the patient to choose a team of doctors that they can trust and who can undertake the entire process. At the same time, the selection of a case is important, which should be evaluated and meet the appropriate criteria to be treated with implants.

In which cases are implants applied?
Dental implants are applied to patients who are missing one, more or all of their teeth. The advantages of their placement are of incalculable quality value, as we have the same sensation in our mouth as before we lost our teeth, correct articulation, excellent aesthetics and the jawbone is not absorbed (lost), as happens in cases where implants will be placed.
When is implant therapy contraindicated?

Patient selection is very important for implant success. If the patient has a good medical history and a careful and individualized planning has preceded, there is no chance with correct surgical procedures and correct medication that there will be a failure.
Indeed, there are cases in which treatment with implants is avoided such as situations where there are chronic general diseases, taking pharmaceutical substances, severe hematological disorders, endocrine disorders, etc. In addition, there is a contraindication in case of bone loss. The next parameter we evaluate is the oral health, as well as the oral hygiene of the patient.
The process of placing implants
In cases where there are teeth that are not amenable to treatment and need to be removed, after their removal, we should wait two months for an initial healing to take place. Then we carry out a special dental CT scan of the jaw where the quality and quantity of the bone can be seen in three dimensions and the pre-operative planning of the reconstructive techniques – grafts and technical placement of the implants – is carried out. Depending on the procedures and techniques that will be followed, we define the period of time that we will put the prosthetic work.
There is, however, a percentage of cases in which immediate extraction, immediate implant placement and sometimes immediate loading, the so-called same day implant, can be performed. However, in order to have the same, high success rates, the tooth should not have any pathological damage to the bone, i.e. alteration, it should be a really healthy tooth, which suffered a fracture due to some trauma and needs to be extracted, the patient should be young , his medical history and oral hygiene allow.
Duration of implants
Absolute guarantees cannot be given in Medicine. If everything goes well during the osseointegration of the implants, the patient practices good oral hygiene and the follow-ups with their doctor, the implants can exceed 20 years.
Maintenance of implants
After the placement of the implants, the patient bears a great deal of responsibility for their maintenance. For long-term success, good oral hygiene is essential. Good brushing after each meal and regular visits (every six months) to the dentist for a thorough cleaning of the teeth are required.
