Important information for Google Photos users. Don’t be deceived

In recent weeks, Google has been adding tools not only to generate various content based on artificial intelligence, but also to… identify it. Now the appropriate notes with identification go to one of their most important projects: Google Photos.

Corrections made to photos using AI are now standard. Removing objects, retouching, replacing the background. No specialized knowledge is needed for any of these activities, just the right tools. Therefore, they are used extensively – and it is difficult to say whether it is still a real photo or a modified one. That’s why more and more platforms are requiring appropriate labeling for such changes — and now information about AI use will also be included in Google Photos

Photos edited with tools such as Magic Editor, Magic Eraser and Zoom already include metadata based on The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) technical standards to indicate that they have been edited using generative AI. Now we’re taking it a step further by making this information visible alongside information like file name, location, and backup status in the Photos app.

In addition, appropriate information will also appear for photos that were created using several images (this is primarily about functions available on Pixel smartphones).

However, it is not known whether this will only work for changes introduced via Google tools, or whether in the future it will also cover others based on advanced analyses. However, this is undoubtedly a step in the right direction. Especially since introducing such changes has never been easier.
