The Hungarian men’s basketball team lost its fourth match in the qualifying group for the European Championship. The second leg of the match against the Turks was much closer in Szombathely than in Istanbul, but it still ended in defeat.
Men’s basketball European championship qualifier, 4th round, group B:
Hungary-Turkey 76-81 (14-21, 17-19, 23-14, 22-27)
scorers: Golomán 16, Perl 14, Vojvoda 14, Keller 10, Hanga 9, Filipovity 5, Lukács 4, Benke 2, Váradi 2, and Osman 33, Yurtseven 22, Hazer 10, Osmani 9, Sipahi 7
The opponent, who played at a much higher speed, continued on Monday where he left off on Friday: he started with 9-0, and from there the hosts could run after the result again. The Hungarian team led by Zoltán Perl, playing at home as a Falco basketball player, started the second quarter with a 9-0 run, and took the lead 23-21 to the delight of the Schaeffler Arena crowd.
The celebration didn’t last long, as the guests responded with a 7-0 run, and György Golomán, who played in the Spanish second division, scored a triple at the best time. The score was 31-40 at the break. After the change of half, the advantage of the more energetic Turks increased to 14 points, who scored from almost every attack, even if only their starting five scored a basket.
There was even a way back from here
However, the Okorn team did not give up, thanks to Perl and Golomán, they caught up to two points in five minutes, and thanks to Ádám Hanga’s bravura triple, the last act started at 54-54.
During this match, the ecstatic Hungarians took the lead for the second time, Dávid Vojvoda also caught the thread, and at 66-60, Ataman asked for time. As a result, the rival gained the advantage again (66-70) – former NBA player Cedi Osman already had 32 points – but the new translation did not work out for the national team.
The national team will play the last two matches of the series in February, playing Iceland at home and Italy away. The first three of the four will qualify for next year’s European Championship.
