In addition to celebrations, several demonstrations were held in the Czech capital on Sunday during the 35th anniversary of the Gentle Revolution. In front of the building of the National Museum in Prague, several hundred people gathered, who do not agree with the Ukrainian flag being displayed on it.
The demonstration was called by activist Ladislav Vrabel, who in the past organized large anti-government protests on Wenceslas Square. According to the iDNES.cz server, about 400 people gathered at the site, chanting slogans such as “fascists” or “shame”. In addition to them, supporters of Ukraine also came there. Dozens of police officers and members of the anti-conflict team oversee the non-violent course of the protest.
According to Vrabel, the gentle revolution was managed by the secret services and State Security. According to the Novinky.cz server, in connection with the Ukrainian flag on the building of the Czech National Museum, he spoke about the “brutal humiliation of the Czech nation” or the fascist state. At the museum, the police detained five people who, according to them, committed an offence.
The demonstrators then wanted to go across Národní Street towards the Strakova Academy, the headquarters of the Czech government. At that time, however, this street was heavily crowded, so the police diverted them through Myslíkova Street.
The protesters wanted to hand over a petition to the government office for the removal of Ukrainian flags from buildings managed by the state. However, Straka Academy is closed during the national holiday. The police detained a man there who was allegedly shouting during the event, added Novinky.cz.
Several dozen anti-government demonstrators also gathered at the main station, from where they set off towards the headquarters of Czech Television. According to the server, they met critics of aid to Ukraine at the National Museum.
The protest was also held on Náměstí Jan Palach. Several dozen people demonstrated there in support of Palestine. There, too, the police supervised security.
Another demonstration was held on Sunday in the Old Town Square, where, according to the Czech media, thousands of people gathered. It was organized by the association Million Moments for Democracy, which a year before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies warned against the rise of authoritarians and an increasing effort to disrupt democratic values.
