“From Beyoncé to Schwarzenegger: celebrities prefer Kamala Harris amid the polarization of the United States” is the title of a news published this Saturday in the Spanish newspaper El País, counting the political preferences of American celebrities to conclude that while Kamala Harris has names like Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé or Bruce Springsteen at her side, Trump “has much less support”.
In a fractured country, where culture and sport appear as rare examples of Americans’ ability to unite, the Spanish newspaper considers that celebrities’ opinions about the candidates have become “especially important”. And when counting support on this front, “Kamala Harris comes out the winner”.
The Democratic candidate’s race may be short, as it only began after Joe Biden resigned under pressure from his candidacy last July, but it was from the first moment based on the express support of influential names in music, cinema and television.
“At the Democratic convention that nominated her candidate, in August, she was accompanied by stars such as Eva Longoria, musicians Pink and Stevie Wonder and the all-powerful communicator Oprah Winfrey”, highlights the newspaper.
Participate: “this is democracy”
Actors Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn, the political advisor and US president in Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal series, are also alongside Kamala Harris. Why? Kerry Washington admits to being driven, in a way, by “some selfishness”, since “action and activism are excellent antidepressants”. “I don’t raise my voice because I believe that we, the actors, have all the answers to major social problems. But as an American, I believe that each of us has a responsibility to participate in the process. This is democracy”, he declared to the Spanish newspaper.
And we are talking about a country where relations between politics and show business have multiplied, firstly in the elections of Ronald Reagan as president of the USA or Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor of California, both for the Republican Party. But now, Schwarzenegger has also joined the group of Kamala Harris supporters: “For someone like me, who talks to people from all over the world and who still believes that America is ‘a shining city on a hill’, saying that the US is the trash can of the world is so unpatriotic it makes me furious. Before I am a Republican, I will always be an American.”
“Politics scares me,” says 50 Cent
And alongside Kamala Harris are many other powerful voices from the world of arts, such as pop culture references: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, who even gave the right to the song to the Democratic candidate Freedom and appeared alongside him at a rally in Houston, Texas, where she was born, “not as a celebrity or politician, but as a mother. A mother who cares deeply about the world that my children, our children, will inhabit.”
And there are many other names joining Hollywood’s support for Kamala Harris, such as George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Katy Perry, Jamie Lee Curtis, Scarlett Johansson, Cardi B, Lizzo, Cher, Eminem, Anne Hathaway, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Stiller, Michael Keaton, David Duchovny, Sarah Jessica Parker, Stephen King, Mandy Patinkin, Billie Eilish, Sally Field, Mariska Hargitay, Neil Young, Octavia Spencer, Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver, Kathryn Hahn, Jeff Bridges, Will Ferrell or Mariah Carey.
Trump now has at his side, among the most visible supporters, former boxer Mike Tyson, Hulk Hogan (wrestling), actors such as Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Quaid, Roseanne Barr and Russell Brand and rappers Kid Rock and Azealia Banks. No case of 50 Cent, following a favorable comment to Trump that he later deleted on social media, declined the Republicans’ invitation to perform at the rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden on October 27. “Politics scares me,” he declared.
