In Daugavpils, two persons painted symbols glorifying military aggression on 14 objects

On November 23, 2024, at around 8:30 a.m. in Daugavpils, the residents of the Grivas micro-district provided information to the officials of the South Latgale precinct of the Latgale regional administration of the State Police that on several objects – a window, a mailbox, an electricity distribution cabinet, three trees, road signs, a roadway, a fence , garage door, electric pole, as well as on the car door. In total, the letters “V” and “Z” are painted on 14 objects in bright green.

In the course of the investigation, the law enforcement officers found out and on November 25 of this year arrested men born in 1995 and 1987 for committing a criminal offense, who have already come under the police’s attention for committing other criminal offenses.

In connection with this event, criminal proceedings have been initiated according to the first part of Article 74.1 of the Criminal Law, that is, for public glorification of genocide, crime against humanity, crime against peace or war crime, or the committed genocide, crime against humanity, crime against peace or war crime, including the USSR or genocide, crime against humanity, crime against peace or war crime committed by Nazi Germany against the Republic of Latvia and its population, public glorifying, denying, justifying or grossly disparaging. Such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for a period of up to five years or by temporary imprisonment, or by probation supervision, or by community service, or by a fine.

The State Police reminds that the laws do not list all symbols glorifying military aggression and war crimes, so the police evaluates each situation individually.

The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until his guilt in committing a criminal offense is proven in accordance with the procedures prescribed by law.
