A patrolling soldier was stabbed in front of the railway station in the French capital Paris. This happened a few days before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, for which a strict security regime prevails in the city.

The soldier was hospitalized with a shoulder blade injury, but his life was not in danger, and the motive for the attack is being investigated, the Paris prosecutor’s office said. However, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office, it was not a terrorist act.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Platform X that a soldier was patrolling the Gare de l’Est train station in the eastern part of Paris and the attacker had since been apprehended.

Paris deploys approximately 30,000 police officers every day in connection with the Olympics, while approximately 45,000 police officers will be in action at the opening ceremony on the Seine River. About 18,000 members of the army also help to ensure security.

The Olympic Games in Paris take place from July 26 to August 11.
