In Germany, in the first half of 2024, 220 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were produced and delivered to the grid, which is 5.3 percent less electricity than in the first half of 2023, according to preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Although this decline occurred, the production of electricity from renewable energy sources increased by 9.1 percent compared to the first half of 2023. More precisely, it increased to 135.2 billion kilowatt-hours. Looking at the share of RES in the total production of electricity, in 2024 it will be 61.5 percent, while in the first half of the previous year the share was 53.3 percent.

At the same time, the production of electricity from conventional sources decreased by 21.8 percent compared to the first half of 2023, with which the share of this type of energy in the total production of electricity fell to 38.5 percent.

Wind energy accounted for a third of the electricity produced in the first half of this year. Moreover, production from wind farms increased in the period of the first half by 11.9 percent compared to the same period in 2023. This is an increase from 65.5 to 73.4 billion kilowatt-hours. Good results in the increase were also recorded by solar energy, by 8.3 percent compared to the first half of 2023, so 30.5 billion kilowatt-hours were delivered. With this increase, its share is 13.8 percent of the total amount of electricity.

While the increase in wind is attributed to an extremely windy period, the result of solar is an increase in the capacity of new plants.

Conventional energy sources

Despite the decline in energy production from conventional sources, coal remains the second most important source, even though it has also declined by more than a quarter. Namely, the amount of electricity produced in coal-fired thermal power plants was reduced in the first half of 2024 by 26.4 percent compared to the same period in 2023. Its share remains 20.9 percent in total electricity production. During the first half of 2024, 45.9 billion kilowatt-hours were produced from coal, which is the lowest amount in one half-year recorded since data monitoring began in 2018.

Also, the production of electricity from natural gas decreased in the first half of this year by 1.8 percent compared to the same period in 2023. With a share of 14.6 percent of the total production, this energy source ranks third in terms of the most important sources.

It should be noted that the statistics include all power plants and power generation facilities in Germany that supply electricity to the grid for general use. On the other hand, electricity produced in industrial plants and immediately consumed in industry is not included, as is electricity produced by solar systems of private households and used in households.
