In Greece, they are preparing a campaign for the safety of motorcyclists, they will not refuel without a helmet | News

The Greek government, together with the owners of gas stations, is preparing a campaign for the safety of motorcyclists on the roads.

It should consist of a new measure, according to which gas stations will be prohibited from selling fuel to motorcyclists who do not wear a helmet. According to the server keeptalkinggreece.com but so far the details of the event are not known and it is not even clear when it will start. But some have already criticized the idea, saying that the traffic police should take care of road safety, and not the pumpers.

The campaign “no helmet, no fuel” was initiated by the owner of a gas station in Crete in the seaside resort of Kissamos, who announced in December that he would not sell gasoline to motorcyclists without helmets. He was responding to the death of 17-year-old Jannis Christodulakis, who died on December 10 in hospital due to a serious head injury in a traffic accident. The owner of the petrol station urged other pumpers not to sell fuel to those who arrive on motorbikes without a helmet.

After this call, representatives of the Greek Union of Gas Stations met with the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, and agreed on a new measure, the form of which is not yet known to the public.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also recently publicly appealed especially to young motorcycle drivers to wear helmets. He pointed out that Greece is one of the countries in Europe with the highest number of people with brain injuries due to motorcycle traffic accidents. According to Mitsotakis, insufficient enforcement of the obligation to wear a helmet is also to blame.
