In Liberec, the repair of the Warsaw cinema has begun for 62 million CZK and will last over a year

Liberec – In Liberec, the renovation of the Warsaw cinema began this week, which is the oldest functional and at the same time the only one-screen cinema in the city of 100,000. The reconstruction of the listed building in Frýdlantská street in the upper center will require almost 62 million crowns and will take over a year. Two-thirds of the costs will be paid by the city from the obtained European subsidy. The city handed over the cinema to CL-EVANS for complete reconstruction on Monday, deputy mayor Šárka Prachařová (ANO) told reporters.

“During the construction works, a new ceiling will be built above the first underground floor, the walls of the hall will be stabilized, new internal engineering networks will be created – water, sewage, sanitary technology, heating, electricity, air conditioning. A new stage will be built, including new acoustic technology. The background will be modified for operating a cinema in the former Barandoff club,” said the deputy. The front facade in Frýdlantská street and the area in front of the cinema will also be repaired. “And this will create a calm and dignified entrance to the cultural institution, which will generally contribute to the cultivation of public space in the historical core of Liberec,” added Prachařová.

Due to the reconstruction of the cinema, the passage through Frýdlantská and Mariánská streets will be narrowed from next week until March of next year. It will not even be possible to park there, and the reserved parking spaces for residents have been moved by the town hall behind the building of the Czech Social Security Administration.

The history of the Warsaw cinema in Frýdlantská street dates back to 1908. The original one-story cinema was replaced in 1922 by a magnificent building in the then modern art-deco style. Subsequently, the building underwent several reconstructions and has had its present form since 1965. The last single-screen stone cinema in LIberec was threatened with extinction 16 years ago, when the town hall closed it due to a lack of money for reconstruction and competition from multiplexes. In 2014, the operation of the cinema was resumed by a group of enthusiasts united in an association, which leased Warsaw from the city and operates it. All major film festivals in Liberec take place in the cinema, including international ones such as the animated Anifilm and the sports Sportfilm.
