In Naples an exhibition on the color red

In

An exhibition that traces the symbolic and cultural evolution of the color red, explored through fabrics and historical documents. Until February 23rd, theState Archives of Naples hosts the exhibition Plots – Red runs on the wire a cultural journey that intertwines history, art and industry, thanks to the collaboration with the Venetian textile company Rubelli and to the contribution of Fashion Museum.

The color red is the absolute protagonist of a journey that narrates centuries of cultural transformations, between luxury, power and devotion, through a selection of textile products of great value, including important sacred finds and documents from the State Archives of Naples. Among these, the cards of the Consulate of the Silk Artan institution of the Kingdom of Naples which, with regulations and statutes, governed the production and trade of silk, establishing strict rules for quality, quantity and prices. The registers and registers present, rich in miniatures and parchment decorations, bear witness to a lively and industrious Naples, teeming with shops of weavers, dyers and merchants, all committed to satisfying the needs of a nobility and a bourgeoisie eager to affirm their status through fine fabrics.

During the exhibition itinerary, visitors will be able to understand the dyeing techniques which, starting from natural pigments such as chermes and cochineal, made it possible to obtain vivid and resistant shades of red, until the introduction of synthetic dyes in the 19th century. The importance of Naples and Venice as textile manufacturing centers is highlighted in a comparative dialogue between the two cities, which share a rich tradition and a dense network of commercial and cultural exchanges. In addition to telling the story of the color red, Plots – Red runs on the wire invites the public to reflect on aesthetic transformations and social issues related to fabrics. The exhibition illustrates how red has been a common thread, capable of crossing different eras to embody symbols of power, faith and social belongingand how this color has become an element of distinction, capable of expressing the prestige and prosperity of its owners.
