In Slovenia, only two percent of passenger kilometers are by train

In 2022, in Slovenia, 86 percent of passenger kilometers were traveled by passenger cars, 12 percent by buses and only two percent by passenger trains. A third of all tonne kilometers were traveled by freight trains.

Protecting the environment, which is threatened and burdened by the mobility of modern humanity, is one of the important things around which our future revolves. That is why the United Nations General Assembly declared November 26 as the World Day of Sustainable Transport. This should be environmentally friendly, but also economically sustainable, but the path to success is otherwise strewn with many more obstacles than those in charge want to see. In reality, Slovenia is only at the beginning of this sustainable path, which is why the country excels in virtually all three branches of mobility: we are above the European average in the use of cars and buses, and completely at the tail end in terms of railways.

When it comes to the share of car transport, we are at the top of Europe.

The train is not yet popular with passengers, it is better with cargo

In Slovenia, the share of rail freight transport in 2022 comprised 32.7 percent of all land freight transport. The EU average was 17.1 percent. With this, Slovenia ranked third among EU members according to this indicator.

The largest share, more than half (53.2 percent), was held by Latvia, and the smallest by Ireland, only 0.7 percent, if we do not take into account countries that have no railway infrastructure at all, such as Cyprus and Malta.

At the EU level, the share of rail freight transport in total land freight transport decreased by two percentage points in ten years, while in Slovenia it remained at approximately the same level or by 0.1 percentage points less.

That is why, in 2022, the share of rail passenger transport comprised more than a modest 2.4 percent of all land passenger transport, which is not surprising due to the infrastructure, timetables, delays and something else. The railway is still quite unpopular due to delays. At the EU level, this share was eight percent.

This placed us in 22nd place, despite the fact that we have a northern neighbor, Austria, where rail traffic is much better regulated, as this country had the largest share of rail passenger traffic, as much as 14.2 percent. Greece had the lowest with 0.9 percent.

At the EU level, the share of rail passenger transport in total land passenger transport increased by 0.4 percentage points in ten years, while in Slovenia it remained at approximately the same level (+0.1 percentage points).
