Renault and the Slovenian government have signed a memorandum of understanding to produce the all-electric Twingo at the French carmaker’s plant located in Novo Mesto, starting in 2026.
According to Renault CEO Luca de Meo, the new Twingo is expected to be priced under €20,000, and will replace the current model, which was developed with Smart and included petrol and all-electric versions, but has now been discontinued its production.
At an initial stage, the production of the new electric Twingo will be 150,000 units per year, with the French company not announcing the amount of the investment.
The memorandum of understanding was signed at the plant, which has produced Renault models since 1973, by Prime Minister Robert Golob and Renault executives, with Golob stating:
Today we sign the commitment of Renault and the government to jointly develop a production line for a new electric car at this location.
Production of the said model will allow the Novo Mesto plant to retain its 1,400 current employees after the previous contract to produce the current Twingo and its electric version ends. The factory currently builds the Renault Clio in a single shift.
