Huawei experienced suffering and heartbreak a few years ago and specifically in May 2019 quite suddenly the US put the Chinese company on the entity list, which prevented Huawei from using its supply chain in the US. It is no longer allowed to work with Google and under this great pressure Huawei had to either use the open source version of Android or develop its own operating system. One year before being added to the entity list, Huawei was working on its own operating system to replace the Google Services version of Android.
“Losing Google’s license to use Android means Huawei would be without Google services. This would mean that the manufacturer would not be able to pre-install any Google apps on its phones, including the Google Play Store.” Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei he stated at the time: “We develop our own operating system because of strategic importance, because we will not be doomed if they suddenly cut off our food, they do not allow us to use Android or Windows 8”.
From the very first moment these obstacles were raised, Huawei took a stand and said that HarmonyOS will replace Android on smartphones and other Huawei mobile devices. The operating system was an Android “fork” and modified Android by adapting the Android Open Source Code (AOSP). This was followed by its release HarmonyOS NEXT on October 22, 2024 after launching a public beta on October 8th. This version of the software only uses the HarmonyOS core and supports only HarmonyOS applications.

The company’s new plan is to have further expansion for HarmanysOS NEXT compatibility and we expect it for Nova Flip, Nova 13, Nova 12 series, Huawei Mate Pad Pro 12.2 inch, Huawei Mate Pad Air 12 inch and other devices. Huawei has previously stated that it would like HarmonyOS Next to become the third largest mobile operating system in the world alongside Android and iOS (numbers one and two, respectively).
Artificial intelligence is deeply embedded in HarmonyOS NEXT in a number of features, including the AI-powered assistant Xiaoyi.
As with any operating system, the success of HarmonyOS NEXT will depend on how successful Huawei is at getting developers to write apps for it. Huawei Consumer Business Group President Richard Yu said that 15,000 apps and services are now part of the HarmonyOS NEXT ecosystem and more are on the way. It also confirms that HarmonyOS is now running on over 1 billion devices worldwide.
