In three months, more than half a billion euros

“Exploded” e-shopping in Serbia: More than half a billion euros in three months

Serbian citizens spent over 540 million euros on online shopping in just three months, the National Bank of Serbia announced.

Citizens shop mostly in domestic online stores, the central bank announced, adding that this data does not include purchases of goods paid for on cash on delivery, which NBS does not have.

Citizens made 19.2 million purchases on the Internet with cards and electronic money, which continued the year-on-year growth trend, which compared to the same quarter of the previous year is 36.1 percent.

The number of online purchases made in dinars recorded a growth of 33.4 percent, while the value of those purchases increased by 34.6 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023. Viewed in absolute terms, the value of transactions in dinars for three months amounted to 36.3 billion dinars, that is, about 309 million euros.

When it comes to internet transactions in euros, their value is around 184.7 million euros. In addition, Serbian citizens spent over 55 million dollars on the Internet. The total figure thus reaches around 548 million euros.

The topic is one of the causes

One of the possible causes of the jump in online shopping is Temu, a Chinese application for online shopping that has become a kind of phenomenon in Serbia in just a few months.

The theme is designed in such a way that it causes potential buyers a certain amount of anxiety that they will miss the opportunity to order the goods at a time when there is a discount for those items.

With that completely irrational urgency Ago it also has another advantage – really very favorable prices that the competition can hardly match, especially because Temu also offers free delivery.

New competitor – Shane

After the dizzying success of Temu, another Chinese online shopping platform – Shane – will soon appear in Serbia.

Shane is primarily known for selling relatively cheap clothes, and the success of that platform is due to its popularity among Generation Z consumers.

It was also stated that the network of JP Pošta Srbije will expand from the current 500 to 1000 parcel machines intended for the delivery of parcels by the end of the year.
