In Ukraine, war drones also fight with sticks

A video released by the Ukrainian Armed Forces shows a Ukrainian drone blocking the propeller of a Russian aircraft with a stick. This technique has already been used on the war front.

In this new episode of innovations on the war front between Russia and Ukraine, we now discover drones armed with wooden sticks. A video published on July 25 by the Ukrainian armed forces shows a Russian drone – ZALA model – being chased by a Ukrainian aircraft in FPV mode (first-person view piloting). The Ukrainian drone is equipped with a pole and will block the rear propeller of the opposing aircraft.

Similar methods have already been observed. Last June, another Ukrainian drone used the same technique to bring down a Russian quadrocopter.

Rudimentary techniques favored on the war front

ZALA are Russian reconnaissance drones with a long endurance – between 6 and 7 hours of flight – developed to provide precise information to the artillery. Hunting the drones before they transmit data is part of the essential missions on the ground.

Using sticks to knock down war machines may seem simplistic but ” It’s all about volume today, less about technique ” tells us a Ukrainian military engineer who prefers to remain anonymous. Let us recall that cardboard drones have already been used during this conflict.

Thousands of drones are deployed and lost every week on the front lines, the most rudimentary techniques are less expensive and can therefore prove effective.
