The Limay (Yvelines) site of the British pharmaceutical subcontractor NextPharma is one of the last seven winners of the government plan for the relocation of essential medicines, the names of which were revealed on Monday January 6 by the Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and digital sovereignty.
NextPharma’s project, representing an investment of 8.8 million euros, involves the creation of a new manufacturing workshop with an area of 1,000 square meters and dedicated to non-sterile liquids, such as syrups. Around twenty jobs will be created within three to five years. They will be added to the 175 employees currently employed in the establishment.
Double production capacity
This operation will double the factory’s production capacity and increase it to 75 million units per year while meeting growing quality requirements. It also aims to secure the production of Levetiracetam, a drug used to treat epileptic seizures. Furthermore, the technical characteristics of the new facilities will offer the possibility of producing 22 additional essential medicines. The project will result in reducing the factory’s CO2 emissions, in line with the carbon neutrality objective announced by the NextPharma group for 2025.
«This achievement is the starting point of an industrial project. We first needed to be able to double our production capacity before being able to develop other activities», specifies Bertrand Piha, director of the site. Work began in June 2024 and the company, which is preparing to receive the manufacturing tanks in the coming days, plans to commission the equipment in July and first commercial production during the last quarter of 2025.
The Limay site is one of NextPharma’s ten global centers of excellence. It specializes in the development and manufacturing of non-sterile liquid formulations for prescription and non-prescription medications. It also manufactures and packages capsules as well as suppositories and double-pointed ampoules. NextPharma has another center of excellence in France which is located in Ploërmel (Morbihan).
