Woo Hong-gyun, professor of radiation oncology at Seoul National University Hospital, was inaugurated as chairman of the board of directors of the Korean Lung Cancer Association on January 1, 2025. The term of office is two years until December 31, 2026.
The Korean Society of Lung Cancer (KALC) is a multidisciplinary society leading the research and treatment of lung cancer and thoracic tumors. As the new chairman, Professor Woo plans to lead innovation in lung cancer research at the academic level and strive to develop new treatments and policies.
In particular, the World Lung Cancer Congress (WCLC) is scheduled to be held in Seoul in 2026, and its role is expected to become even more important. This is the second time that WCLC will be held in Korea, following 2027. Accordingly, Professor Woo emphasized the importance of the academic society and requested that there be a lot of interest and participation from members.
Meanwhile, along with this inauguration, Professor Woo received the Minister of Science and ICT Award on the 27th of last month. This award is in recognition of Professor Woo’s contribution to the baryon accelerator construction project in collaborating with domestic and foreign researchers to lay the foundation for technology commercialization and application to medical fields.
Professor Woo said, “This award means that we will continue to innovate in cancer treatment in the future based on our past project achievements,” and added, “As Chairman of the Board of the Korean Lung Cancer Society, we will continue to strive to improve the treatment of lung cancer patients and advance research.”
