The coronavirus continues to record increased activity according to the weekly epidemiological report of the EODY. The number of new admissions was 669 also showing an upward trend while 26 new deaths were recorded.
It is recommended again by EODY series of emergency measures especially for vulnerable population groups (elderly and people with underlying diseases) the scrupulous observance of preventive measures against respiratory infections and the timely seeking of medical advice on symptoms, in order to provide timely treatment.
At the same time, it is recommended to the general population, in the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, to limit contacts with people belonging to vulnerable groups.
According to the weekly report of EODY, the positivity in all tested samples showed an increase compared to the previous week, while the number of new introductions was 669, with an increasing trend. There was a 44% increase on the average weekly number of new admissions over the previous four weeks (average weekly number of admissions weeks 24/2024-27/2024: 464) and the number of admissions in the corresponding week of 2023 was 226.
At the same time the number of new intubations was 12, while the average weekly number of new intubations in the previous four weeks was six and the number of intubations in the corresponding week of 2023 was two. Due to coronavirus, 17 patients are intubated and 26 deaths were recorded. The average weekly number of deaths in the previous four weeks was 17 and the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2023 was 17.
The age distribution of patients intubated in the last four weeks (week 25/2024 – week 28/2024) is shown in Chart 10 (see below). The median age of
of patients was 77.5 years (range: 0-93 years), while 97% had underlying diseases and/or age 70 years or older.
BA.2.86 with F456L and R346T mutations (new class of variant strains under surveillance since 4/6) appears to be prevalent in recent weeks while viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater has shown an increase in SARS-CoV-2 circulation in seven of the ten areas checked.

Influenza virus
Regarding the influenza virus, according to the epidemiological report of the EODY, no positive samples were found in the community (Sentinel PPH surveillance network), nor in hospitals (SARI surveillance network), while no new serious case with hospitalization in ICU was recorded. nor a new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza.
However, a severe case of laboratory-confirmed influenza with an ICU hospitalization with an admission date within week 27/2024 was retrospectively reported. From week 40/2023 to week 28/2024, 149 people with laboratory-confirmed influenza were hospitalized in the ICU and 71 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.
At the same time, for the same period, 1,064 influenza strains have been typed (derived from Sentinel community samples, from SARI surveillance samples and from hospital samples outside surveillance networks), of which 557 (52%) were type A and 507 (48%) type B. From week 10 onwards there is a prevalence of type B, both in the community (Sentinel PHC surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).
In total, 539 A-type strains have been subtyped in the two Influenza Reference Centers. 494 (92%) belonged to the A(H1)pdm09 subtype and 45 (8%) to the A(H3) subtype.
Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV
A similar picture for the respiratory syncytial virus – RSV, where no positive samples were found either in the community or in the hospitals.
At the same time, the number of cases of influenza per 1,000 visits remains at low levels as for severe acute respiratory infection.
