According to a new Bloomberg report, the company’s chairman, Nathan Garyalong with his team were negotiating with Annapurna owner Megan Ellison to spin off the video game division and turn it into independent entity. However, negotiations broke down when Ellison withdrew, which led to the resignation of Gary and other executives, with the rest of the staff following shortly after.
In a statement to Bloomberg, Ellison confirmed that Annapurna’s priority is to continue to support its development and publishing partners during this transition period. The company is also committed to expanding its presence, looking for new opportunities. The development teams working with Annapurna Interactive are at a loss, trying to understand what these developments mean for their future proects.
The new president, Hector Sanchez, one of the company’s co-founders who returned last month, assured developers that all contracts will be honored and that staff will be replaced. Annapurna Interactive provides various services to its partners such as financing, quality assurance and marketing. The anxiety of developers is therefore understandable, as their projects may be at risk if the publishing company collapses. Among the successful games released by the company are Stray, Cocoon, Outer Wilds, What Remains of Edith Finch, and more.
