Indigenous varieties of poultry, wine and mushroom batteries; another day in agriculture

At the end of 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture of Serbia announced a competition for incentives aimed at preserving animal genetic resources, including autochthonous poultry species such as the Sombor caporka and the Banat gološian. The maximum amount of incentive per user is three million dinars. These autochthonous varieties of poultry are currently being bred by a dozen breeders in Serbia, and the number of breeding flocks is not precisely known.

Dragan Dragosavac from Sremski Mihaljevac raises these chickens and plans to increase the flock, as well as to breed it in order to realize the right to state subsidies of 400 dinars per hen. In addition to poultry farming, Dragosavac is engaged in other agricultural activities, such as raising sows and sowing grain for animal feed. He points out that the meat and eggs of these chickens, which are fed with natural ingredients and graze outdoors, represent a healthy alternative to industrial products. Each year, each hen lays between 170 and 200 eggs. Dragosavac also emphasizes the importance of cooperation with other serious breeders in order to purchase chickens and expand breeding, which can contribute to the use of empty yards in villages for additional income.

And next to poultry, wine and mushrooms

In addition to autochthonous varieties of poultry, Serbia can also be proud of the vineyards of Fruška Gora, known for their authentic wines. The Fruškogorsk vineyard has gained international recognition, especially thanks to the production of bermet, an aromatic wine with a tradition that originates from medieval monasteries. Bermet is produced with the addition of over 20 herbs, and its recipes remain the secret of every winemaker. It is available in white, pink and red varieties, with the red bermet being the most sought after, especially among tourists looking for unique gastronomic experiences. This wine is often served with the Karlovy Vary kuglof, a cake with nuts and fruit, the symbolism of which is similar to the Slavic cake.

On the other side of Europe, Swiss scientists are developing innovative technologies. They have created a biodegradable mushroom battery that uses the metabolism of yeast and white rot fungi to generate electricity. The battery is activated by adding water and nutrients, while being manufactured using 3D printing. This technology has potential for application in remote regions, and researchers are striving to improve its efficiency and durability. Working on alternative energy sources represents an important step towards a more sustainable future.
