Indonesia introduces complete ban on iPhone 16

It has been banned not only to sell but also to use the iPhone 16 and several other Apple products in Indonesia.

If you’re planning a trip to Indonesia and using Apple products, you just got a new item on your to-do list: finding out if they’re legal. The Indonesian government has introduced a ban on the iPhone 16, Apple Watch 10 and other Apple products that have been launched in the autumn. The ban covers not only selling the products but also products that have already been sold, which in practice means that it has become illegal to use owned products. The ban covers both residents and tourists. This according to the publication The Economic Times.

The reason for the ban is that the country wants to force Apple to fulfill its investment promises in the country. Apple is said to have promised $109 million for investment in Indonesia’s infrastructure and for local purchases, but is said to have only fulfilled the promise with $95 million. The investments in Indonesia were due to the fact that the Indonesian government requires foreign companies to meet a requirement of 40 percent local content in order to operate in the country. Apple had promised to establish research and development facilities in the country, so-called Apple academies.
