Infographic: Chinese Competitors Closing In on Amazon

Amazon closed its biggest Prime Day(s) ever this week, but it is questionable whether the American company can maintain its lead. Chinese e-commerce parties such as AliExpress or more recently Temu are advancing.

The infographic below looks specifically at Chinese company Pinduoduo, which is projected to trail Amazon by just 13 percent in terms of gross merchandise volume by 2024. To put that into perspective, in 2019, Amazon’s gross merchandise volume was more than twice that of Pinduoduo.

Pinduoduo also owns the online marketplace Temu. The Temu app went live in the US in the fall of 2022. Although Temu’s global merchandise volume of around $30 billion is still quite small compared to amazon.com’s $389 billion, sales forecasts point upward.
