In Slovenia, under the supervision of the Environmental Agency (ARSO), a thorough inspection campaign was recently conducted targeting companies that maintain and install equipment that uses fluorinated greenhouse gases. The goal of the action was to check compliance with environmental standards and regulations that control the use of these gases, known for their high global warming potential.
It covers 223 authorized companies and is aimed at reducing emissions, as well as promoting sustainable practices in the industry. The focus is on the maintainers of air conditioners and cooling systems, who are obliged to report annually on the amount of fluorinated gases they have used.
The inspection results, published on the website of the Government of Slovenia, showed that 24 companies were no longer registered. A total of 135 violations of the regulations on fluorinated gases were determined by the inspection. Of the 157 authorized companies that were under supervision, 86 were found to have irregularities, while 37 companies passed without any recorded violations.
Special attention was paid to air conditioning services, where non-compliance with regulations was found in 47 out of 64 inspected cases. In the processes that are still ongoing, the inspectors initiated 83 misdemeanor proceedings, and 54 warnings were issued without fines, thanks to the quick response of the company to the observed irregularities.
Across Europe and the world, similar initiatives are taking place to limit emissions of fluorinated gases. The European Union, for example, is leading the way with its 2014 F-gas Regulation, which aims to cut HFC emissions by two-thirds by 2030. The regulation implies strict controls, detailed reports on the use and recycling of these gases, and quotas that limit their availability on the market.
