Robin & The Backstabbers played last month at the Rocanotherworld festival, which took place in Iasi, and last weekend at Electric Castle. Shortly before going on the stage of the Iesian festival, I caught him Andrew Robin, the band’s voice, to ask you some questions. About rock, AI, past and future, live presence or the films they project at concerts.
“Everything has been in decline since the world and the earth — even before! — and I don’t see why rock music would strike a discordant note. Rock music doesn’t even exist. So, Either it’s reborn or it’s rising, to have where it fell wide again. And again, and again, but each time differently, as tradition demands,” says Andrei.
That’s how we found out that the band met Nicu Covaci for advice, a secret that unfortunately cannot be disclosed, or that the Bacovia Overdrive trilogy does not resemble the initial image. For even more inspiration, keep reading below while listening to any of the band’s 3 albums on Spotify.
What’s new in the life of Robin & The Backstabbers
The way in which I perceive concerts has changed a lot — new little habits appear that are impossible to observe from the outside, but which give a completely different touch to the way you understand the ceremonial. We are a different band than the one who played the previous concert, let alone the one from the beginning.
How do you see the Bacovia Overdrive trilogy now?
It’s like when you go on vacation and before you get there you create, based on absolutely nothing, an image of what it’s going to be like, how people are going to look, what color the chickens in the neighboring yard are going to be and what they’re going to taste like have the food, and when you get there everything is completely different from what you imagined and suddenly you realize that you don’t even know what you imagined anymore.
The films shown during the concerts
It’s a gentle overstimulation, sometimes in the right direction, sometimes the wrong one. But it’s a pleasure to go back and see ALIEN or The Office on the screen.
Is rock in decline?
Everything has been in decline since the world and the earth—even before! — and I don’t see why rock music would strike a discordant note. Rock music doesn’t even exist. Therefore, either to be reborn or to rise, to have where to fall again. And again, and again, but each time differently, as tradition demands.
Tell us a funny incident from last years tournament
We met with Nicu Covaci (rock!), who gave us some advice worth following, but for reasons of national security, I’m not allowed to say what exactly.
Where do you get your daily inspiration from?
Inspiration is perhaps a way to fight the passage of time. A certain moment he wants not to be overlooked, he wants to stay, and he asks to be saved, but that is not possible. One still tries, which leaves behind little marks, maybe on a piece of paper, or maybe on a hard drive. But the result of inspiration has little to do with the moment of inspiration.
The influence of AI in music
AI is the new rock music. It is only simulated consciousness (but I like it). Come do what you want.
A message for the fans from Iasi
Be kind and gentle to yourself, Iesian fan, and there will be others.
Where will we see you in the next period?
In summer poses — under the open sky, in electric light, in noise, around the backstage coffee machine, smiling myopicly.
