Intel plans to cut hundreds of jobs, mainly at research centers in Israel, to cut costs. This gives the competition an opportunity to acquire experienced professionals.
Intel plans to lay off hundreds of employees at its Israeli development centers as part of austerity measures. Intel currently employs about 11,700 workers in Israel, including 7,800 in research and development and 3,900 in manufacturing, which, unlike research, will not be affected by the restrictions. The company has not yet specified which research teams will be affected the most by the reduction, but the cuts are to affect all three research workplaces.
In the past, Intel’s Israeli team contributed to significant projects, such as the Banias platform for notebooks, which marked success in mobile technologies, and the Yonah/Merom architecture, which replaced energy-intensive Pentium 4 chips and strengthened Intel’s position in high-performance computing.
Layoffs create opportunities for competitors. Nvidia has already hired dozens of former Intel employees in Israel this year, and more could follow as Nvidia offers higher starting salaries and more attractive working conditions. In addition to Nvidia, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google are also targeting talent leaving Intel.
