The mobile market has been going through a relatively turbulent period in recent years, when sales were falling and interest in new models was declining. Higher problems in the form of, for example, the war in Ukraine, the semiconductor crisis, or rising inflation were to blame. Recently, however, the situation is gradually improving and the latest numbers are positive again.

Interest in mobile phones is growing

The latest sales figures for the third quarter of this year published by IDC show that the mobile market has picked up a bit again. During this period, 316.1 million phones were sold, which is a year-on-year increase of 4% and thus continues the trend from last quarter, when sales rose by as much as 6.5% year-on-year. Overall, this is the fifth straight quarter of growth and suggests that the market is returning to normal.

Samsung retained its lead in terms of sales and thus market share, although it reported a slight year-on-year loss (-2.8%, current share 18.3%). The South Korean giant sold a total of 57.8 million phones in Q3 2024, followed by Apple as usual. The latter improved by 3.5% year-on-year (56 million phones sold, 17.7% share).

Who else succeeded in the mobile segment

Xiaomi became the third biggest seller, which is also more or less a tradition. This improved by 3.3% year-on-year, selling a total of 42.8 million phones and holding 13.5% of the market. Fourth is Oppo, it increased its sales by 5.9% year-on-year and with 28.8 million phones sold, it has a market share of 9.1%.

Vivo then became the fifth most successful manufacturer, it grew the most year-on-year out of the top five and reported a 22.8% increase in sales. Overall, in Q3 2024, Vivo sold 27 million phones and holds 8.5% of the market. The rest of the manufacturers sold a combined 103.7 million, resulting in the aforementioned 316.1 million phones sold, an improvement from Q3 2023’s 303.9 million.

What are the prospects for the future?

It looks like the market is slowly getting back on track and the combination of strong sales from the major brands, i.e. Samsung and Apple, with the ever-improving players from China means that sales are likely to continue to grow. We will see how the last quarter of the year will be in terms of sales and whether we will see growth again.
