Internet tariffs massively more expensive after 24 months

A study conducted by Verivox on 266 tariffs shows price increases of an average of 53 percent after the first two years of the contract.

According to a new analysis by the comparison portal Verivox, the monthly costs of most Internet tariffs increase by an average of 53 percent from the 25th month onwards. According to the study, over 40 of the tariffs examined even double in price. The tariff service is not increased, but remains the same.

Telekom in the crosshairs

The comparison experts examined 266 tariffs. The result: 244 have become significantly more expensive after the minimum contract period. All tariff classes are affected, from the 16-megabit basic tariff to the 1,000 Mbit/s fiber optic line.

At Deutsche Telekom, the gap widens after 24 months – 28 of 30 tariffs with a price jump of more than 30 euros per month are Telekom tariffs. “Nobody should have to pay a higher price for the same service from one day to the next,” says Verivox expert Jörg Schamberg.

Switching is worth it

The tariff expert recommends comparing tariffs. “Those who switch after two years can save almost 500 euros over the next 24 months,” he says. Changing providers after the minimum term not only offers great savings potential, but often also guarantees better service.

“In many cases, customers who switch from an old internet contract now get twice the surfing speed for the same price,” adds Schamberg. Thanks to a change in the law, contracts can no longer be automatically extended for a further twelve months, but can be terminated monthly after the minimum term, it is said.
