iOS 18.0.1 & iPadOS 18.0.1: Apple releases first update

Bug fixes and security update

Apple has released the first update for iOS 18. iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1 fix bugs and bring important security improvements.

After Apple released the new iOS 18 operating system in mid-September, there were a number of reports of errors and problems. Some of them were annoying, others had more serious consequences. Accordingly, it is not surprising that the company is now following up with a first update. iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1 were released on Friday night.

The updates focus on fixing bugs and improving security. The focus is particularly on the new iPhone 16 models and the iPad Pro with M4 chip, which were most affected by the errors in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Bugfixes in iOS 18.0.1

With iOS 18.0.1, Apple has fixed several bugs that arose after the major release of iOS 18. One bug affected the responsiveness of the touchscreen. The iPhone 16 models were particularly affected by this. The problem should now be resolved. Another issue affecting the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera has also been addressed. The camera froze when shooting in macro mode with the ultra wide-angle camera in 4K with HDR disabled.

The bug where the Messages app suddenly crashed in connection with a split Apple Watch face has also been fixed. Performance issues that could be caused by incorrect memory allocations were also addressed.

It is not yet known whether the problems with retrieving emails with IMAP accounts have been resolved. There is no reference to this in Apple’s changelog.

iPadOS 18.0.1 brings back update for iPad Pro M4

The update to iPadOS 18.0.1 also brings back compatibility for the current iPad Pro with M4 chip. The original update to iOS 18 caused such serious problems that Apple withdrew the update. Some devices stopped responding after the update to iOS 18.

Updates also for watchOS and macOS

The Apple Watch and Apple Computer are also receiving their first updates. In watchOS 11.0.1, the bug in the Messages app has also been fixed. Apple is also addressing issues with sudden smartwatch restarts, music app crashes, and reduced battery life. A touchscreen error should also be fixed with the update.

In macOS 15.0.1, Apple also fixes security program compatibility bugs. Since the update to macOS 15, problems with disconnections and invalid internet connections have been reported.

Security improvements

Apple is also bringing a few security improvements with the first iOS 18 update. This allowed an app to potentially access the microphone for a few seconds before the microphone indicator was activated. It is not known whether this resulted in unwanted audio recordings.

There was also a bug in the new passwords app. Passwords were read out loud using the VoiceOver function, which is actually intended to ensure greater accessibility. This should now be prevented by a logic improvement.
