Apple presented iOS 18 for iPhones in June at WWDC24. A few days ago, it was announced that the update process for all users will begin on September 16. When exactly will this happen and what is worth knowing a few hours before the update goes live?
Let’s start with which iPhones are to receive iOS 18. Apple announced a few months ago that the new operating system will be available on the same devices that received iOS 17 a year ago. These are the models iPhone Xs, Xs Max, Xr and SE 2nd generation and all newer.
If you have an iPhone from before 2018, then unfortunately you can’t count on a new update. Last year Apple removed the 8, 8 Plus and X models from the support list. Of course, the decision will not be reversed and these smartphones will not receive the new system (and subsequent versions).
You should also prepare your iPhone accordingly. First you need to make sure there is a free space. Installing a new system requires a few gigabytes of free space. If you don’t have enough space, it’s worth deleting unused applications or unnecessary photos or videos.
By the way backup copy. It’s better to be safe than sorry and create a backup, which will be necessary to restore the phone in case of problems after the update. You can do this by going to the section Settings, Apple Account, iCloud and Backup w iCloud. Alternatively, it can be saved to your computer’s disk after connecting your phone with a cable.
Thirdly there is no need to hurry. It is worth waiting an hour or two from the time of its release to update. This time can be used to check that everything is OK and the software is not causing errors, which has happened in the past.
During the September conference, Apple did not announce what time the iOS 18 update process would start on Monday. However, we assume that it will start soon. after 7:00 p.m. time in Poland, as it was in the past. Then you will be able to go to the section Settings, General and Updateswhere after a while information about the availability of the new system will appear.
Today, Apple will also make the systems available for other devices. These are macOS Sequoia, tvOS, iPadOS and new software for HomePods with numbers 18 and watchOS 11. We should also expect these updates after 7:00 PM.
