iOS 18 RC lets you pause and resume video recording

During the launch event of theiPhone 16Apple has presented several new features regarding the camera functions of the new device. Among these, one particularly interesting function stands out: the possibility of pause and resume videos while recording with the system Camera app. This feature, unlike the new Camera Control which is exclusive to the range iPhone 16will also be available on older models running iOS 18.

How the new pause feature in videos works

With the update to iOS 18 RCwhen recording a video using the app Cameraa new button will appear Break in the lower left corner of the screen. Tapping this button temporarily pauses recording, allowing you to block the video. Tapping the button again will resume recording from where it left off.

While the video is paused, a text “BREAK” will appear at the top of the interface, just below the recording timer. Additionally, the Pause button will change to a record buttonindicating that, if pressed, recording will resume.

This new feature offers interesting creative opportunitiesallowing you to carry out jumps between different scenes within the same video file without having to edit them later. This is a great convenience for those who want to make videos quickly and with less post-production work.

The ability to pause and resume video in real time opens up a whole host of possibilities creative uses. The most obvious use is the possibility of making “jump cut” (jumps between scenes) during recording, changing the shot between pauses. In this way, you perform a small edit directly during shooting, saving time in post-production. This function can be useful for creating dynamic and immediate content, especially when you want to speed up the creation of videos without too many subsequent interventions.

But that’s not all: while the video is paused, it is also possible switch from one lens to anotherthus creating more dramatic zooms that jump between different focal lengths. Imagine switching from a wide angle to a telephoto lens during a break, adding a visual variety to the video without interruptions or subsequent editing.

The interesting thing is that you won’t need to buy a iPhone 16 to be able to use this function. Even the older models running iOS 18 will be able to benefit from this new feature. This makes the update even more interesting, as it allows a wider range of users to take advantage of advanced features without necessarily having to change their device.
