iOS 18 will introduce a feature that will make AirDrop obsolete on Macs

Apple’s operating system continues to be enriched with new functions. One of them concerns file sharing and could compete with the much-loved AirDrop feature.

The arrival of the new iOS 18 operating system does not prevent Apple from working on new features. One of them concerns file sharing, which could be done faster than the famous AirDrop function.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

The new beta of iOS 18.1 and its macOS counterpart have many surprises in store. Among the updates, we learn via Android Authority that the iPhone Mirroring app, presented at WWDC24, which allows you to emulate your iPhone on your Mac, will support drag-and-drop functionality. A change that will allow users to easily transfer their files from an iPhone to a Mac or vice versa without using AirDrop, a cable or any cloud solution.

The new feature should save time for videographers filming on iPhones, as it will save them from having to manually transfer large files or invest in expensive hard drives.

An expected function

Presented with great fanfare, this iPhone copying system is currently awaited by European and French users. While more unofficial systems exist to access it, the official route seems to be blocked by the Digital Markets Act or DMA.

Apple confirms: after the iPhone, the iPad will also be shaken up in Europe

The DMA is a European regulation aimed at regulating digital companies and preventing their abuses. A regulation that is not to the liking of Apple, which has engaged in a standoff with the European Union by delaying the arrival of many features.

DMA does not currently concern macOS, as Apple is said to be concerned that by emulating the iPhone on Mac, it could be subject to the same rules as on iOS and iPadOS. When asked about the subject, Brussels confirmed to Numeramathat the tool does not contravene European rules in any way.
