Apple has temporarily pulled the iPadOS 18 update for the iPad Pro M4 models, as a small number of those iPads reportedly became inaudible after the update.
‘Bricked’ is the nightmare after an update. That your device has become useless, like a brick. The screen no longer turns on, it can no longer be accessed via USB: nothing. That nightmare affects a ‘small number’ of M4 iPad Pro models, Apple says in a response to MacRumors.
The update to iPadOS 18 has therefore been pulled for specifically those iPad Pro models with the M4 chip. They cannot download or install the update until Apple has found the cause. If you have an iPad Pro M4 that has already updated to iPadOS 18 without any problems, you do not need to worry: either something goes wrong during the update, or you are not unlucky and the update went well.
Warranty, still not fun
The issues have already been reported by several iPad Pro users on Reddit. Inquiries at the Apple Store then confirmed that the iPad Pro M4 with the incorrectly installed update should indeed be sent to Apple. This means that the problem is very complicated, and that the iPad probably needs to be replaced. Fortunately, the iPad Pro M4 has only been out for a few months, and is therefore still well covered by the warranty.
The cause of the problems is unknown, but it could be related to the fact that there are two updates available for some users: one to the latest version of iOS 17, one to iOS 18. Several users report that they first installed the iOS 17 update, after which the iOS 18 update went wrong. Those who went straight to iOS 18 do not seem to have any problems. Whatever the case: fortunately, the problem has now been detected and the update has been stopped.
