iPadOS 18 update paused for iPad Pro with M4

Having arrived for the second time, iPadOS 18 promises a lot of improvements for the iPad. This system seems to be having some serious problems on the iPad Pro with the M4 SoC, with the update having been put on hold. Apple’s most expensive iPad appears to be freezing during the installation of iPadOS 18.

Although the extent of the problem is not known, Apple has already acknowledged the issue. It revealed that “we have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models while we work to resolve an issue affecting a small number of devices.”

The issue first came to light on Reddit. A growing number of M4 iPad Pro users described how their iPads became unusable after trying to install the latest version of iPadOS. “At some point during the update, my iPad turned off and wouldn’t turn on,” user tcorey23 posted on Reddit.

“I just took it to the Apple Store who confirmed it was completely locked, but said they needed to send it to their engineers before they could give me a replacement, even though I have Apple Care.”

Another Reddit user named Lisegot wrote that the Apple Store where they took their locked M4 iPad Pro didn’t have a replacement in stock. That meant they would have to wait five to seven days for a working iPad. “No one was particularly apologetic and even implied that there was no way to know if the update caused this,” he said.

iPadOS

It's rare to experience a software bug on an iPad. It's worth noting that iPads can usually be put into recovery mode if a software update fails. If you have an iPad Pro with M4, you should wait, as Apple has paused the iPadOS 18 update until the issue is resolved.

It's unclear when this will be fixed, but Apple is already focused on resolving the issue that is causing this issue. After that, iPadOS 18 will be made available again and will be accessible to all users.
