As expected, one of the main protagonists of the event “It’s Glowtime” Apple’s September 9 announcement was iPhone 16along with its version Plus.
The new smartphones represent a further step forward in Apple’s lineup and in the category, with great attention to artificial intelligence and the photographic sector. The new models introduce not only higher performance guaranteed by the new Apple A18 processor, but also a design that, while maintaining many familiar elements, brings with it some interesting innovations. The design of the new iPhone 16 e iPhone 16 Plus It also features a more vibrant color range than previous models.
The color palette includes more saturated tones than the previous generation, while the arrangement of the dual cameras on the back, now oriented vertically, recalls the design of the iPhone 12, but with significant improvements in terms of functionality and photographic performance. The body shapes do not change much compared to last year’s models, with a square frame and the rear glass compatible with MagSafe wireless charging. The display is once again interspersed with the Dynamic Islandwhich includes the front camera and Face ID sensors, distinctive elements of the latest generations of iPhone. The lower part returns to the USB-C charging portalready adopted in the previous model, which continues to be a practical choice for users, as well as in step with the times.
Apple Announces New iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Here’s All the News
The quality of the screens has been further improved, with the standard model maintaining a 6.1 inch display and iPhone 16 Plus which offers a viewing area of 6.7 inches. Both models employ Super Retina XDR OLED panels and can reach a Peak brightness of 2000 nitss, theoretically ensuring optimal vision even in bright lighting conditions.
Also very interesting is the ability to go down to 1 nit, which allows for more comfortable use in extremely dark environments. Latest generation Ceramic Shieldwith an advanced formulation, is 50% stronger than the first generation and 2 times stronger than the glass on any other smartphone, according to the manufacturer.
The performance of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus has taken a leap forward thanks to the new A18 chipBuilt on second-generation 3-nanometer technology, the new SoC offers a significant performance boost over its predecessor: the 6-core CPU is the 30% faster than A16 Bionic and even more energy efficient, running the same workload on up to 30 percent less power. Apple says the 5-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster and 35 percent more efficient than its predecessor, delivering much faster performance for both Apple Intelligence and advanced gaming.
Thanks to the new hardware platform, the new models are the first “basic” Apple smartphones to be designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence, Apple’s proprietary personal intelligence system designed to offer tailored experiences to users, while maintaining high standards of privacy. This system takes advantage of the characteristics of the A18 chip and the generative models developed by Apple for understand and create language and imagesas well as perform actions between different applications. As we previously discussed after WWDC, Apple Intelligence is based on an innovative approach called Private Cloud Compute, which balances local processing on the device with larger server-based models, ensuring maximum privacy for user data.
A crucial aspect of the improved performance of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is the new heat dissipation system. Apple has redesigned the internal architecture of the new models to optimize thermal management, while housing a larger battery that promises significantly longer battery life, and also improving heat dissipation. The result is the guarantee of higher sustained performanceespecially during intensive activities like gaming or using AI-based applications for longer periods without the phone overheating.
The gaming capabilities of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have been improved with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, enabling up to 5 times faster frame rates than previous models. Both new phones now support AAA games previously available only on iPhone 15 Pro, as well as new titles like Honor of Kings: World with an optimized graphics mode for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, coming next year. Game mode in iOS 18 offers more consistent frame rates while making AirPods, game controllers, and other wireless accessories more responsive.
Apple has also paid particular attention to battery life. Thanks to the new internal design and advanced power management in iOS 18, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus should deliver a significant increase in battery life over previous models. The efficiency of the A18 chip combined with the internal redesign of the device enables up to 30 percent faster sustained performance for gaming while ensuring Apple Intelligence runs efficiently on iPhone.
One of the most interesting innovations is the Camera controla feature that combines hardware and software solutions to enhance the photography experience. It is a button located below the power button that provides haptic feedback during interaction. It is based on a switch, a high-precision force sensor that enables light press gestures, and a capacitive sensor for touch interactions. Camera Control allows users to quickly launch the camera, take photos, and start video recording with a simple gesture, ensuring that no important moment is missed. It also offers a new camera preview that helps users frame the shot and adjust options such as zoom, exposure, or depth of field, simply by sliding their finger over the control.
By the end of the year, Camera Control will evolve furtherallowing users to access visual intelligence to quickly and efficiently identify objects and places around them. For example, users will be able to see the hours or ratings of a restaurant they are photographing, add an event from a flyer to their calendar, or quickly identify the breed of a dog. This feature will also extend to third-party toolsallowing users to perform Google searches to find where to buy an item or utilize ChatGPT’s troubleshooting capabilities.
As for the photographic sector, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are equipped with a 48MP two-in-one Fusion camera (with focal length of 26mm and Sensor-shift OIS stabilization). The main module uses a 2x telephoto lens option with optical quality, which allows users to get closer to the subject without compromising image quality, according to Apple. The main camera is paired with a new 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera with autofocus and macro mode, capturing stunning details up close. The new module can collect up to 2.6 times more light than the previous model, dramatically improving image quality in low-light conditions.
Added to these features is the supporto per i video 4K a 60 fps in Dolby Vision e i video spaziali in Full HD a 30 fpswhich can be used for example with the Apple Vision Pro headset.
For security and communications, the new models can now send and receive satellite messages when outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, a feature that also extends to SMS and emoji (initially in the US and Canada). Satellite messages are end-to-end encrypted, ensuring maximum security of communications, while the new Emergency SOS Live Video feature allows users to share a live video feed or photos with emergency dispatchers during an emergency call, significantly improving the ability to respond in critical situations.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus also introduce the Action buttonwhich we saw on the last-generation Pro models. The new button offers quick access to a variety of functions with a simple press and can be customized to quickly open the camera, activate the flashlight, switch between ring and silent mode, recognize music with Shazam, activate voice memos, Focus, Translate and accessibility features like Magnifier. It can also access in-app features, such as helping a user unlock and lock their car with FordPass.
Apple has placed great emphasis also on environmental sustainability. As part of Appleās 2030 vision to be carbon neutral by the end of this decade, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus feature more than 30 percent recycled content. That includes 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 80 percent or more recycled steel across multiple components. The battery is made with 100 percent recycled cobalt, and for the first time in an iPhone, more than 95 percent recycled lithium. The packaging is made entirely of fiber, moving Apple one step closer to its goal of eliminating plastic from its packaging by next year.
