iPhone 16: Big production cut ahead of iPhone SE 4 assembly start

An information note for customers of the banking company Barclays states that the Apple may have reduced the production of the series iPhone 16 by 3 million units this year.

Analysts came to this conclusion by checking Apple’s supply chain and noting that the company cut orders in the December quarter with a “key semiconductor” partner.

Conducting sales checks to see how the iPhone 16 series is doing, Barclays says that compared to sales of the iPhone 15 series at the same time last year, iPhone 16 sales are down 15% year-over-year. This reduction would impact shipments of the new iPhone 16 series for the September quarter. Barclays reports that Apple will ship 51 million units for the third calendar quarter that includes July, August and September.

Analysts at Barclays blame Apple Intelligence’s staggered rollout, “limited adoption of AI outside the US” and a “lack of hardware diversification” as reasons why the fourth quarter of 2024 ending in December “looks increasingly likely to risk’ for shipments of the iPhone 16 series.

Speaking about iPhone production, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said on Tuesday that Apple is preparing to start production of a new iPhone codenamed V59. That model is the upcoming iPhone SE 4. The report adds that Apple could launch new iPad Air models at the same time as the iPhone SE 4.

iPhone 16: Big production cut ahead of iPhone SE 4 assembly start

As for the iPhone SE 4, it will be the first new SE phone since 2022’s iPhone SE 3. It will look like the iPhone 14, meaning it will ditch Touch ID in favor of Face ID. The 6.1-inch OLED screen will be “edge to edge” and will have the famous “notch” at the top of the screen. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to come with 8GB of RAM and could be powered by the same 3nm A18 processor that powers the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

Still, the iPhone SE 4 will have a major design refresh. After all, the iPhone SE 3 was based on the appearance of the iPhone 8 which had a Home Button, Touch ID and had an LCD screen. We expect to see the iPhone SE 4 launch possibly in Spring 2025.
