The first reviews of theiPhone 16 they have finally arrived and, apparently, the difference between the basic model and the more expensive ones Pro has never been so small. While many Apple fans have shown preference for the Pro and Pro Max models, the iPhone 16 also received several flagship features, especially in the camera department, impressing reviewers.
Here, we take a look at the opinions of some of the most important technology publications, including The Verge, TechRadar, CNET and GQ, which give us a complete picture of how the new iPhone 16 positions itself on the market.
New Camera, but with reservations
According to Allison Johnson of The Verge, the real news for the iPhone 16 is the Camera Control Buttoneven if the experience was not entirely positive:
“The standard iPhone has felt neglected for the past few years. But that changed this year, with the iPhone 16 closing the gap with the Pro models. I have mixed feelings about Camera Control, though. I love the buttons, but in practice I find it difficult to use, often shaking the device or accidentally changing the exposure.”
According to Johnson, the button is too stiff and requires too much concentration when using it, leading to a distraction that risks ruining the moment of the shot.
TechRadar’s Jacob Kroll has a different opinion on the Camera Control button, finding it to be a significant added value, especially for content creators:
“The line between standard iPhone and Pro models is increasingly blurred. iPhone 16 is now a powerful and affordable option, with a new Camera Control button for easy photo and video capture.”
Kroll emphasizes that for those who love to take photos or videos, the Camera Control Button is a great evolution. However, it takes some practice to learn how to properly manage the necessary pressure.
CNET’s Lisa Eadicicco was struck by the evolution of photography styles, made more accessible and easier to use thanks to the new button:
“The real strength of Camera Control is not so much the quick startup of the camera, but the ease with which you can cycle through the various modes without having to take your hands off the shot.”
Eadicicco particularly appreciated the ability to easily switch between different photography styles while taking a photo, offering more creative options than previous versions. Even those without much experience in photography can achieve professional results with ease.
An Ever-Blending Line Between Standard and Pro iPhones
Robert Leedham Of GQ highlights how the iPhone 16 has acquired many of the features that were previously exclusive to the Pro models:
“Last year’s iPhone 15 represented a leap forward, but the 16 goes even further with a broad range of pro-level features, including macro photography and a smoother Ultra Wide camera.”
Leedham found the introduction of the particularly interesting macro photographymade possible by the improved pixels of the ultra-wide camera and the faster aperture. This type of shooting, previously the prerogative of the Pro models, now offers everyone the ability to create detailed and dynamic images.
It’s clear from the reviews that Apple has narrowed the gap between the standard and Pro models, making the iPhone 16 a much more competitive choice than it used to be. Personally, I think Apple is doing this to make customers feel less “penalized” for choosing a non-Pro model, while still offering advanced features that were once reserved for more expensive models.
