iPhone 16 sales banned in Indonesia

Indonesia, which is the fourth largest mobile market in the Asian region, also banned the distribution and use of iPhone 16 models after Apple failed to fulfill the promised investments. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, the company’s mobile phones cannot be distributed domestically, as Apple mobile phones do not meet local regulations.

Indonesia requires that in order to obtain the TKDN certification required for certain domestically sold smartphones, companies must rely on local resources for a minimum of 35%, and must provide this much added value, which can be manufacturing, research and development or software development in Indonesia.

The operator profession has been hit by a number of very strong influences in recent years.

Apple does not yet have a production line in Indonesia, but since 2018 it has been setting up app development academies, which has so far invested approximately 1.5 trillion rupiah ($95 million).

The people of Cupertino had previously undertaken to invest an amount equal to 109 million dollars (1.71 trillion rupees) in the country, of which they finally completed only 95 million dollars. Due to the missing amount, however, the Indonesian government decided to block the issuance of the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) certificate for the affected devices.

So far, around 9,000 iPhone 16 units have arrived in Indonesia. The ban covers all four new iPhones, and the Apple Watch Series 10 smart watch, which is also subject to the national ban, did not escape either. For the time being, it is questionable what Apple will do before everything can go according to schedule in the rather decisive market, it will certainly have to meet the Indonesian regulations.
