Apple achieved higher turnover last quarter, partly thanks to sales of the new iPhone 16. But the quarterly figures also point to a problem that Apple should be very concerned about.
Apple has announced that sales increased by 6 percent to $94.9 billion in the previous quarter. That was a new record for that quarter. iPhone sales amounted to $46.2 billion, an increase of more than 5 percent.
China remains a problem
The launch of the iPhone 16 should also bring about a turnaround in China, where Apple has recently been losing market share. But turnover on the Chinese market actually fell slightly last quarter, to 15 billion dollars. That was according to Bloomberg less than what Wall Street analysts expected.
Because of this setback, China remains a concern for Apple. The company faces stiff competition in the country from local brands such as Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi. Shortly after the unveiling of the iPhone 16 in September, Huawei presented the first double-folding smartphone.
Apple Intelligence
The new AI features on the iPhone 16 should drive increased demand, but the first Apple Intelligence features only appeared this week with the update to iOS 18.1. Even more AI functions will follow in December with the arrival of iOS 18.2. Whether Apple Intelligence will lead to a sales boost in the coming weeks will only become apparent with the next quarterly figures.
Services are still growing
Apple achieved 12 percent more revenue from its services, such as the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music and Apple TV+. The services together accounted for almost $25 billion.
iPad sales increased by 8.6 percent, but it was still lower than analysts had expected. This also applied to the ‘wearables, smart home and accessories’ category, which yielded 3 percent less. This includes, for example, the Apple Watch and AirPods.
New iPhone SE
Next spring, Apple can get a new boost with the introduction of a new affordable iPhone SE. The new SE is expected in March.
