iPhone 17 could integrate an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has announced that at least one model in the iPhone 17 range will be equipped with a Wi-Fi 7 chip developed in-house from Apple, marking an important step in hardware-software integration. The company plans to include the proprietary Wi-Fi chip in nearly all of its devices within three years, which could reduce component costs and improve device optimization.

The new Wi-Fi 7 chip, built on TSMC’s 7nm N7 process, will allow Apple to reach the highest specifications of Wi-Fi 7, which enables speeds of up to 40 Gbpsfour times faster than Wi-Fi 6E. Key benefits include:

  • Simultaneous transmission on 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bandsreducing latency
  • More stable and faster connectionparticularly useful for streaming and augmented reality applications.

This choice should also allow Apple to be less dependent on Broadcon’s current supply of Wi-Fi chips.

In addition to Wi-Fi, Apple is working on a proprietary 5G chip for future iPhones, including the upcoming iPhone SE and the much-rumored iPhone 17 Air. While there is still uncertainty, Apple could combine Wi-Fi, 5G, Bluetooth, and GPS capabilities into a single chip for greater efficiency.
