Barclays analyst Tom O’Malley and others recently explained the results of their inspection of the Asian region’s supply chain in a research note (MacRumors). The analyst said he “confirmed” that the fourth-generation iPhone SE is scheduled to be released by the end of the first quarter of next year. This release date means March. Coincidentally, this coincides with the release of the 3rd generation SE in 2022.
In fact, all three SE models released so far were released in the spring. The first generation SE was released in March 2016, the third generation model in March 2022, and the second generation SE in April 2020. There was a four-year gap between the first and second generation iPhone SE releases, so while this three-year gap is unusual, it is not unprecedented.
Regardless of the release schedule, the research note reiterated previous claims that the 4th-generation SE will be the first iPhone with a 5G modem made by Apple. This is clearly an important step forward for Apple as it has the potential for significant cost savings, and could also lead to significant improvements in battery efficiency.
It may be surprising that the low-end SE would be equipped with advanced features six months before the launch of the standard iPhone series, but it is highly likely that it will become a reality. This iPhone SE is expected to include a new modem, the iPhone 15’s 48-megapixel main camera, 8GB RAM, A18 processor, and Apple Intelligence support.
