Apple has expanded its list of old and obsolete products by adding more iPhone and Apple Watch models. Thus, the iPhone XS Max and iPhone 6S Plus are now labeled as “vintage” on the company’s website. There are even more products coming into this category.
The update was recently detected and states that the iPhone 6S Plus with 32 GB of storage was previously classified as “obsolete”. Furthermore, the company has not yet added the smaller iPhone XS and iPhone 6S models to the “vintage” list.
For reference, the iPhone XS Max was launched in September 2018 and discontinued in September 2019 with the arrival of the iPhone 11 series. It was the successor to the iPhone
The iPhone XS Max supported fast charging, but initially shipped with Apple's low-power 5W charger. The device was also in the news after users were irritated by the exaggerated effect of smooth skin in selfie photos. This problem, known as “beautygate”, was later fixed by Apple through a software update.
Additionally, the list of “obsolete” equipment now includes the aluminum and stainless steel Apple Watch Series 2 models. However, the Cupertino giant has not yet included the premium Series 2 model with a ceramic case in this category.
According to the words themselves From Apple, a device is marked “vintage” if it has been five years since it stopped being sold, but less than seven years. A device is considered “obsolete” seven years after Apple stops selling it on the market.
Owners of older Apple devices can request service from Apple or an authorized service provider if parts are available. This is not the case for obsolete products, as Apple discontinues all hardware services and service providers are not authorized to order parts. One exception is that MacBooks may qualify for an extended battery-only repair period of up to 10 years.
